January is usually the peak season for booking holidays, as proved by most Ireland travel trends, but 2025 has seen a slower start due to post-Christmas delays and severe weather conditions. Paul Hackett, CEO of Click&Go and Vice President of the Irish Travel Agents Association, noted that late returns to work, school closures in southern Ireland, and the impact of Storm Éowyn on January 24th disrupted travel bookings. Many areas remained without power, further delaying travel plans.
Sun Holidays Dominate Travel Plans
A survey by Click&Go revealed that sun holidays are the top preference for 2025, followed by cruises and city breaks. Data shows that 89% of Irish residents took at least one holiday last summer, with 59% travelling two to three times. Despite a 4% price increase from 2023 to 2024, demand remains strong, with families prioritising holidays despite rising costs.
Top Destinations for 2025
Spain, France, Portugal, Italy, and Greece continue to be the most popular destinations due to high flight and ferry availability. Despite the strong US dollar, the USA remains attractive thanks to over 20 direct flights from Ireland. Hackett suggests that flexibility with travel dates and destinations can lead to cost savings, with mid-week flights and Saturday-start city breaks offering the best value.
Smart Booking Tips to Save Money
Hackett recommends booking early to secure the best prices and variety. With inflation easing in 2024, price increases in 2025 are expected to be minimal. He also highlights the benefits of early bookings, including low deposits and monthly payment plans from travel agencies. With no capacity limits at Dublin Airport this year, travellers can expect stable flight availability and prices.
Growing Popularity of Cruise Holidays
Cruises continue to gain traction, with 82% of Irish and UK travellers expressing interest in taking another cruise. In 2023, 2.3 million Irish and UK tourists embarked on cruises, thanks to a wide range of options from budget to luxury experiences. The convenience of visiting multiple destinations without unpacking has made cruises an increasingly popular choice.
Emerging Cruise Destinations
Mediterranean cruises remain the most in-demand, with other growing markets including Northern Europe, the Caribbean, and river cruises along the Rhine, Danube, and Douro. Expeditions to Antarctica and the Arctic are also gaining interest among seasoned travellers looking for unique adventures.
Rise in Domestic River Cruises
Domestic river cruises have seen a surge, with the Irish Boat Rental Association reporting increased local interest. These trips appeal to younger families looking for relaxed, nature-focused getaways. Steve Conlon of the IBRA highlighted that “soft adventure” holidays, such as self-paced boating trips, have become a popular trend.
Active Travel and Adventure Holidays
Spain and Portugal remain top destinations for sun-seekers, particularly in Lanzarote, the Costa del Sol, and the Algarve. Meanwhile, Sunway has reported an increase in bookings to less traditional spots like Morocco and Nashville, offering high-value luxury experiences.
Adventure holidays are also on the rise, with travellers increasingly opting for cultural treks, safaris, and active experiences. Pat Falvey of Irish and Worldwide Adventures notes that the over-50s demographic is leading this shift, using their disposable income for unique, physically engaging trips. Popular destinations include Nepal, Machu Picchu, and Africa’s safari regions.
The Future of Ireland Travel Trends
As 2025 progresses, travel preferences are shifting towards more adventurous and flexible options. Cruises, sun holidays, and guided cultural tours are gaining traction, with an increasing number of travellers valuing experience over traditional leisure trips. Travel companies that adapt to these evolving trends will remain competitive as Irish travellers continue to seek diverse and enriching holiday experiences.
